" WHAT A FILIPINO IS LIKE:
BELIEFS AND TRADITIONS IN SELECTED PHILIPPINE PLAYS."
We Filipinos have different beliefs and traditions that until now are alive and being practiced. Some of this beliefs are about relationships, marriage, family, and etc.I am sharing some of the beliefs and traditions that are found in selected Philippine plays: " The New Yorker ", "The world is an apple", "Sabina",and Sepang Loca".
There are Filipinos that are fascinated by the culture of other countries. Sometimes they even imitate and forgets their own tradition. for example Kikay the main character of The New Yorker in Tondo. She have gone to New York for one year and when she got back to Tondo, she want to change the tradition of a Tondo women as a New Yorker girl. She was overwhelm by the tradition of New York and even made her mother dress and mannered like a New Yorker citizen. She also denied the memories they shared by her childhood friends and even disgusted by what her childhood friends told her.
Poverty is one of the problem in Philippines that's why parents do their best to provide and sustain the needs of their family. This belief may relate to the play entitled " the World is an apple", this play shows that poverty can change the perception of an individual and can make one self be bad in order to solve the problem. For example Florentino , the father of the play " The World is an Apple" . He steal just one apple just for his daughter and because of that he was out of his job.
We also have this belief that if a woman have an affair to a married man it is a disgrace not just for the family but also in the society. The play "Sabbina" is related to this belief. The family of Sabbina are against to the relationship of Sabbina towards Mr. George Price because they knew that Mr. George is already married. And it is a disgrace especially to those who are really sensitive of what may people think and say.
Superstitious beliefs are the most popular belief of the Filipinos. This beliefs affect and molded the personality of a Filipino. The play " Sepang Loca " shows the superstitious belief that if a woman wants to bear a child, she must pray and give some gifts like a dance in a Patron Saint to answer her prayers to bear a child.
